Don't know what kind of snake?

I have found a snake which looks like a garter snake but searching on the internet i have had no luck finding what kind of snake it is. It is all black with tiny med brown spots all down top of body and on bottome and had black eyes so far it is about a foot and a bit long! I found it in some long dry grass next to a rock cliff on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.
Please help me figure this out.

Try looking up the northwestern garter, Thamnophis ordinoides.
