New uro..couple questions

earthpig23 Oct 17, 2004 08:04 PM

Okay I have done my research and own plenty of herps..more than what my sig has(needs updating. Anyways I just purchased a uro he is doing pretty good he eats some greens but only from my hand and was eating tomato as well. We were keeping him on newspaper fpr the first few days..than switched to parakeet seed just yesterday.
Now before he did seem slightly stressed ran around the cage alot..but he also spent plenty of time basking. Today since switching substarte he stays in his hide most of the time and will only eat the seeds today.

Will he only eat the seeds if they are there?
Do Uro hide alot at first til the get acclimated?

Info temps are god basking spot 120 with great heat gradient throughout tank..uvb light as well and multiple hides. he is still a young one.

I'd say that acclimation may need a bit more time. I'm not a fan of the seed for substrate (tried it) but I have nothing bad to say about it. I would limit the amount of changes you do until he's fully acclimated. Give him time to come out and eat on his own, from his dish. He knows where the heat is, and that you're not a threat. Rocky, I found, sometimes wouldn't come out all day if the under tank heater wasn't on. Almost like it's too cold to get out of bed.

Also, don't worry yet about the eating only out of your hand. I would, however, not encourage it so he gets used to eating out of his dish. If it becomes a prolonged issue, there are some simple steps you can take to get him "feeding himself."

Good luck.

Oh yeah....PICS?

How young is young? It is recommended to keep the juvies on paper substrate until they are 6-12 months old, depending on their size.

I had what appears to be an unusual experience with the seed substrate. My uro prefered the seed to any other food. I tried it for a week hoping he would get over it, but became worried about his hydration level. He never did stop eating the seed substrate, instead of any other foods, including prior favorites like apples. I think this just depends on the Uros personal preferences, but I ended up stickign with sand for my adult Uro.

Have you checked the nutrition lists for tomatoes? I am not sure if there is any documention on them one way or the other, but they are part of the nightshade family, so I would inherently think they should be fed sparingly, if at all. That is just a thought though.

Congrats on your new Uro! They are wonderful creatures.

i thought tomatos were off limits with reptiles because the acid in them could kill off digestive enzymes or something along those lines. perhaps we should all read up on our tomatos. welcome to the forum and don't let these picture freaks scare you off, ha ha!

I know that on the Beautiful dragons wed site it says to Tomatos feed rarely due them being acidic.

I have to agree with Jimbo, I do not like the seeds either. Used it years ago, for a brief time.
Got rid of it when I saw my uro go to the bathroom, and as I was preparing to go over and clean it, she ate a few peices of seed from the same area
EWWWWWWWWW.

But I too, would leave it for now, keep changing and you will cause more stress! Just be patient, Your new friend has to adjust to his new home.

I just wanted you to know we are GLAD your here. But we do REQUIRE atleast one pic of your guy, heheheheh

Enjoy !

Wow what a response..I have not posted on Kingsnake for a while to many unwelcomin people on some forums but hey you guys are great. Thanx for the info will leave him alone for now he is if anything eating the seeds. I'll let him get acclimated and than switch to the paper substrate again. I eventually will try to use a soil mix but one step at a time..lol
Well cannot dissapoint the pic hounds so here you go.
