Herp Laws of Chicago

Snakesunlimited1 Oct 17, 2004 08:19 PM

I am thinking of a move to Chicago and would like to reserch the laws on herps. Snakes being the main thing I keep those laws would be the most important. If there are "City Laws" the offical city boundries would also be helpful. I know N.Y. city covers a huge area and so do their laws. I was hoping Chicago proper was not the same but state laws would be helpful as well.

Thanks Jason

Your best bet would be to contact a member of the chicago herpetological society. They would be the most up to date on any laws passed in that area. For more info visit their link below.

"The Illinois Dangerous Animals Act (reference: IL CS 720-585) specifically prohibits the keeping of any poisonous or life-threatening reptile. Although no definition of what constitutes a life-threatening reptile is included in this regulation, Illinois currently considers any adult (over six feet in length) constricting snake and all crocodilians to be life-threatening. "

Ouch.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard this same quote elsewhere and wonder if that applies to my Honduran Milks, Everglades Rats, Eastern Kings, Common Boas, or Bull snakes? That would be crazy. The rule seems like it could be inforced when they want to "deal with problem people" and let slide when they like you. It is pretty open to enforcement.

The 6 foot law in Illinois applies only to licensees of the IL Dept of Ag, NOT to private individuals. If there are specific questions you have in regards to what you can and cannot legally possess in Illinois, please email me and I'll be happy to answer your questions.
