Next question....Roaches!

ZPD Oct 17, 2004 09:27 PM

When I bought my new BD, I remembered back when I used to own one. The only thing I didn't like was the darn crickets. Next to Dachius' booth was a guy selling lobster roaches. I ended up buying 200 of them. My BD is about 7-8" right now. I was hoping to have a self sustaining colony that I could feed my single BD from. Anyone out there doing this? If so any comments or suggestions? It seems to good to be true! No smelly crickets, no chirping, no money down the drain, a self sustaining colony!! Do you think starting with 200 will be sufficient? I dont mind supplementing with worms and of course greens too, just no dang crickets. I also bought 5 hissers, I figured by the time the BD is big enough I can switch him to the hissers. Thanks for your time and I would love to hear any feedback you guys have for me.

i know nothing about the roaches. but i also would like to hear about breeding them. crickets are annoying. i have to keep them in the basement because all there chirping calls the outside ones to my window and it drives me nuts. plus they smell so bad.

So your boy is about 8 inches. well mine is also part german from dachiu and if yours is anything like mine it will grow really really fast.
good luck with him

I've switched from crickets to silkworms. They're working out extremely well for all my herps. Leo's, BDs, turtles.
You can keep a self growing colny of these.
I like the idea of roaches, but just bring myself to keep roaches in my house.
I did'nt like the idea of crickets running around my floors, I'm certainly not gonna like roaches running around loose.
However, I may give in to temptation.
I'll be following you folks to see how you make out.
Good luck

Roaches are great. The lobsters are small (about the size of a cricket) and breed like mad. 200 will probably get you started, I just wouldn't feed off of them right away, let them establish a colony first. 5 hissers will take a looong time to get going but once they do the smaller ones make good food.

bennet from beardiedragon, who used to post here kept roaches as a breeder colony. he stopped posting here, along with a bunch of other regulars. you might try his website for some info. good to have you back Sean btw.
