Ig not eating as much as usual

MissMiniZoo Oct 17, 2004 10:01 PM

Irwin hasn't been eating quite as much as he was over the summer. I have looked on the internet for answers but nothing quite fits...such as I haven't changed his cage conditions, all temps are the same (although the house may be a bit cooler-although I doubt it since we had air conditioning in the summer), and I haven't changed his food types nor how I cut it up.

He still eats but not nearly as much as he did before. He looks healthy and still moves around his cage. When is breeding season for igs?? I did read that they will not eat as much during breeding season. Maybe that's it? Maybe the UV light needs changed? It still works but perhaps it is too old to work the best it should. Any suggestions?? If this continues too much longer I may take him to the vet, but at this moment I don't think its too serious as he still eats and acts normal.

Yup, depending on your ig, he can already be in it, or just around the corner. I wouldn't worry about it unless he doesn't look healthy (or is not eating or drinking anything for days on end). Dexter's eating has been down for the past few weeks, and every few days he gets very restless, but so far he is not there yet. In another 2-4 weeks he will become a total impossible wretch, but will start to eat like a pig again. I don't think most igs eat that much in the midst of breeding season, but he burns so much energy trying to kill everything that he seems to need the extra food...

If that pic is Dexter, he is beautiful! How old is he? Irwin looks similar but less bulky. I imagine Irwin will look even closer to Dexter once he gets older. Irwin is only 3 now. Thanks for your reply!

Dexter is about 4-1/2 years old now and about 9 lbs. The photo was from breeding season last year. If you want to see him in full breeding season psycho mode, click the link below, then right click the link on that page and "Save As" (it's about 5Megs). It's a small clip of him stalking me and beating up his toy. I've found that having a toy like this is a good way to transfer his aggression away from me...
