Looking for Cape York Spotted Python info?

TallTex Oct 17, 2004 11:49 PM

I am new to the world of pet snakes but have found a local breeder who breeds Cape York spotteds. I am looking for a snake that is a little more active than a bp but perhaps not as active as a kingsnake and a friend turned me onto the spotteds. However, it seems that they must be one of the lesser known of the python species because I really haven't been able to find out too much about them? I am interested in any information that anyone can provide me with in regards to this type of snake, particularly as a first snake. Any recommendations, advice, and links to websites with info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

get yourself one...you wont be dissapointed....i have one and its great...its a very aggresive eater and loves to climb.
i have a couple bp's and they dont even compare....the spotted is out alot crusing and climbing
they are easy to take care of. not really any different than a bp..
just give them a hide some water and some branches to climb on and the proper heat and they will be happy

good luck

Thanks so much for the replies and websites to check out...it's good to hear some back up on what the breeder had told me. This sounds like exactly what I am looking for in my first snake! Do you guys know of any breeders? So far, I have only found the one local guy here but don't have any others to compare.

By the way, is there any kind of humidity issue with the spotteds? I have read that some of the pythons require that their cages be misted and kept at a certain level but I hadn't seen anything about this for this particular python.

Any advice/info on housing and keeping these snakes would be appreciated.

Thanks again!

I had one for a while. My spotted shed yestereday and it was the dryest day Wollongong has ever had (6% humidity). It was a perfect shed. My old cape-york shed even better. Humididty really isn't a problem with the Anterasia's, especially the arid ones. They do like it hotter than you'd expect or mostly read. I'd have the hot spot a few degrees over what you'd normally have, aslong as you have the ambient temperature down to normal again.

They are the easiest and most gentle snakes I own. You can get some really nice ones if you know where to look. I am surprised you can't find anything on them. Here are some sites that talk about them and some pics of my cape yorks.

I am still learning how to do this forum communication. I sent a reply but it only showed up as a reply to the first responder. Anyways, thanks for the information. I especially appreciate the pics you sent, those are some awesome looking snakes. Did you order them over the net or find a local breeder?
Also, are there any issues with humidity in regards to these spotted's cages?

Thanks again!

Thanks. I got the male (larger one in the pics) from a breeder last year and the female from a dealer(LLL) at a show.

As for humidity, there are no humidity issues with spotteds. At least I have not had any trouble with them. They do great in just about anything. I keep young ones in shoe boxes with aspen bedding for substrate and a small dish of water. Older ones need the same basic setup but bigger.

A word of advice when picking a Cape York is that you should keep in mind that Cape Yorks are more of pattern than a color. I see a lot breeders selling light colored spotteds as coming from the Cape York peninsula. Generally, Cape Yorks have huge spots on their backs, often with sort of a linked or striped pattern. They are especially good looking when they are brightly colored, but they are rarely as yellow as some of the ones in the links I sent you.

I have a care sheet on spotted pythons, as well as links to various websites, that I can email to you. I used to have this info on my website. (which is temporarily closed for remodeling).

I keep Cape York spotted pythons and Irian Jaya carpet pythons. I've successfully bred the IJs and hope to breed the Cape Yorks in the upcoming season.

Thanks for the offer George, I e-mailed you a few days ago, did you receive it?

George Alexander Oct 25, 2004 07:09 AM

No, I haven't gotten an email.

TallTex Oct 25, 2004 01:05 PM

Ok, I just re-sent the e-mail. Please let me know if it shows up...no idea why it didn't work the first time.

Thanks!
