How easy are mice to breed? (more)

savana_man Jun 28, 2003 05:47 PM

1.How easy are they to breed?
2.How many should I get to feed a juvenile savana monitor? I was thinking 1:2.
3. Any other info will be greatly appreciated.

I can't get rats because my mom said no and none of the pet stores have them here. I do have good news thought...She said ok to mice and when I visited a pet shop today looking for rats I got offered a summer job!

Juvie Sav...likely to eat a lot. I'd actually go with 1.3 rats, and feed them as pinks. When the sav gets bigger, you can switch to fuzzies, and so on.

If you do mice, you may need more than 1.2, as a juvenile lizard is going to eat 2 or 3 of them every week. Mice take longer to grow to a large enough size to make a full meal.

Thanks! You seem to be one of the only people who answer my questions anymore. LOL!! Well i'll take a pic of him tomorrow next to a ruler so you can get his size. I don't know how old he was when I got him, but I've had him for about 3 months now. I have to know by july 12th what I wanna get, because thats the only reptile show for a month. I can get mice anytime, but rats only at this show.

i raise mice now for my baby king and they're pretty easy to breed only don't get impaitent waiting for the 1st litter it might take a while for them to settle down.but as soon as the snake gets big enough i'm gonna switch to rats for all of the above mentioned reasons. mice, if you try to introduce a new female to an existing colony , forget it! the dominate female is gonna kill her so to switch out females you have to raise up one of their babies to rotate out older females and they stink bad gotta do it outside rats are alot better and usually don't bite

Yeah, let your mom read all that we've said and reassure her--rats are less smelly, less aggressive, and even less destructive. They are clean animals, and if you get tame youngsters make great pets by themselves--they have soft fur, and are intelligent and social, much moreso than mice, hamsters or gerbils.

In the event of, heaven forbid, an escape--it would be a great deal easier to find a rat than it would be to find a mouse.

You might tell your mom that mice are gonna smell way worse than rats and be a lot less personable. That said you will want 1.3 at least as your sav is gonna wolf pinks. I am a big bug feeder with mine, to help keeping her from being too heavy. And she loves to chase bugs.
Don't get huge adult mice and toss them together or you will have a slower start then getting some that look medium or small even.

Well what i've decided to do since my mom still sez no to rats. Is get mice bring them home let them breed, stink, and do what ever. So when my sav is old enough for rat pinkies she will be tired of mice. Or I can just go to the reptile show and bring home some rats.LOL!! That always works, thats how I got the sav.

You could tell her that they're "Designer Jumbo Mice". :D

I'd go with that line. Or swear the sales man told you they were mice. LOL
