Food Preparation-Squash & Zucchini

spook Oct 18, 2004 12:12 PM

For any of you who use yellow squash or zucchini, please tell me how you prepare it. Do you leave the skin on, peel it, chop it, shred it, scrape it, use a food processor, etc? Any info would be appreciated.
I'm a new victim of 'Uro love'. I've bought a pair of Malis from Dr. Dix in June.

The answer to this question depends on their ages.

For my adult I cut the squashes into fairly thin strips, maybe an 1/8th to a 1/4 inch wide and tall, and 1/3 to 1/2 in long. or in little cubes. I usually hand feed the squashes because my Uro loves them, so they are a treat. Hence the longer cut so I can hold onto them. I do leave the skins of the zuchini on them, unless they are particularly tough. The squashes I grew in my garden this year had really tough skins so I have been cutting them off.

For babies though, you would want to cut them up much much smaller than that, and I always remove the skins for the babies.

I hope that is a little help. The Uro love bug is definitely catching! Glad to have you on the board. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people here who love to help people and discuss their views on Uro care, so it is a great resource!

They are a 16 month pair. Kermit and Piggie; I know 'How original.'
The female is the boss. Great eater, establishes territory, up at the butt-crack of dawn, but has a delicate side. She only poops off of elevated structures.
The male is your typical teenager. Sleeps all the time, occasionally suns and then eats and goes back to bed. Not very motivated.
Both eat out of my hand and are fairly easy to handle. The male seems to be starting to color up.
Thanks for the info on the food preparation.

I haven't used zucchini or yellow squash, but I use various winter squashes most of the time. I cut them into hunks and peel them, then store the hunks in the fridge with paper towel in a tupperware deal. Then when I make salads in the morning, I just grate off one of the hunks with a cheese grater. Keeps pretty well this way, but I don't know how it would work with yellow squash and zucchini which are more watery.

Thanks. I just found out how not to store my zucchini. Yesterday, after preparing some for the uros I sliced up the rest and froze it. It is soft and mushy. I see if they eat it today or it I need to throw it out.
I will try you storage method the next time. Thank you.

Zucchini has a lot of water, and actually stores best on the counter. If you buy the smaller zuchinis and cut off what you want to use, the end will "seal up", then the next day you will need to cut off the dried up bit on the end, and start all over. They will last for a few days that way. You can do the same thing and put them in the fridge, they may keep a little longer that way, but won't be quite as "fresh".

I know what doesn't work. I tried freezing it and it is soft and slimey. I am also going to try wrapping it in a wet paper towel and sealing it in tupperware. I'll let you know how it works.

>>I am also going to try wrapping it in a wet paper towel and sealing it in tupperware.

Make that a dry paper towel - and when it gets really damp, replace it with a new one. That will keep the moisture down to discourage the moldies.
