Question about UVB lighting

AlteredMind99 Oct 18, 2004 01:36 PM

Ok, so how many of you use a UVB light with your Crested Geckos? I have read some things that say they dont need them, and some that say they do....what do you think?

It’s unlikely that a nocturnal gecko would rely significantly on sunlight (UVB) for vitamin D synthesis. It’s much more likely to obtain it though dietary means. To my knowledge, there’s no reliable data suggesting that Rhacs need UVB light.

I don't use any UVB lighting at all. Never have actually with any of my nocturnal geckos. If you supp with calcium on a normal basis then youre fine.

My babies grow very rapidly on the T-rex diet alone and I rarely even put Calcium supp in a dish for breeding females. I do check thier calcium sacks in the roof of females mouths every 2-3 weeks during breeding season to make sure theyre in good shape. Only if low in the sacks do I add calcium in a dish for them to take.

I get well calcified eggs and never less then 12 eggs from a female a season. This is my 3rd season breeding them and never had a bad egg yet.

So IMHO I dont feel you ever need UVB as long as you take care of them all the time.
