Burrowing cresteds??

kidcrazee82 Oct 18, 2004 03:34 PM

Recently I found two of my cresteds(seperate cages) sleeping underneath their substrate. I have just started to give them a cooling period and was wondering if this was a sign of hibernation. I haven't read anything about them burrowing in any of the literature i have looked at. Anybody that can answer why please do! Thanks in advance -Joe

a few of mine have done this on and off. my first crested, stimpy, first started "burrowing" under patches of moss and such when i moved into a new place temporarily. i attributed his behavior to the fact that there were 3 cats in the house, and im sure it was an anti-predatory behavior. since i moved out of the place, he slowly began sleeping in the open again, but time to time i still find him burrowing in the substrate. now theres a trio that i keep separate, and just very recently i noticed one of the sub-adult females going and sleeping under the moss. a few times earlier, i saw her poking her head under moss patches. i figure the reason she's digging is because shes almost to maturity, perhaps shes practicing what she needs to be ready to bury her eggs.

When I noticed the first one burrowing i thought it may have been because she was pregnant, due to the fact that she is an adult female and is caged with an adult male. The second one that burrowed was a sub-adult male in a seperate cage. Since my first post I noticed that my third crested, an adult male that is with the female, was also burrowing. They don't seem sick and they are all eating, and I hear them jumping around in the cages at night, so I figure I'll just let them do whatever they're doing.
