Assault weapon ban... questions????

repzoo44 Oct 18, 2004 04:47 PM

Does anyone know the jist of the assault weapons ban that lapsed a few weeks ago. Ive heard a republican and an aquaintance who is in the nra say it was worthless anyway. They say it was only cosmetic and that you havent been able to purchase assault weapons since the 40's or so( I think). Im under the impression that there had to be something to this law. Anybody have some info for me. Thanks.

The Ban only sounded good. It was some BS! Bottom line, if someone wanted to hurt you, they dont need a gun to do it...

True, if someone wants to do you harm then they have multiple ways of doing it. But, was this just a feel good law. Maybe Ill just look at it sometime. Do we still have background checks, no sales at gun shows, and things like that?

Yes, we do still have background checks when purchasing a firearm. They are instantly done through the FBI database.
For one thing, the ban limited the number of rounds that a clip, magazine could hold to a maximum of 10. Previously, there was no limit. However, the ban only stopped production of these, it did not illegalize those already in existence. The bottom line is that no ban like this is going to do any good because it only effects the law-abiding citizens. Last time I checked, the criminals around here don't fall into that category.
