Shedding question

jayskee Oct 18, 2004 07:46 PM

I have had my RES for almost a year and I have never really seen him shed....he is growing (very big) lol... is this normal not to notice the shed....i see it on his neck sometimes but never his shell.

Also, I have little feeder fish in his tank for him to eat, I was wondering if there are any pretty fish to add color to my tank and that would not hurt him to eat.

well... to start off, your turtle should NOT be growing at a rapid rate, and you should not be seeing it shedding often!Again, as most would agree, i really wish people would read up on their animals before buying them. your turtle should actually only grow 'about' an inch per year!

there could be 2 reasons your turtle is shedding, the first (and less likely) is that the water temperature is too high, i would say anything above 80 is too warm. the other (and more LIKELY) reason is because you are overfeeding your turtle which will probably lead to irreversible pyramiding of the shell and early death of your turtle. you should ONLY be feeding your turtle the size of protein (aka pellets) that would fit in his head per day (for first yearling turtles) and any turtles over a year or two old should only eat EVER OTHER day! the rest of the time you should be introducing your turtle to greens (dandelion leaves, collard greens, broccoli, lettuce (not iceburg), and any other fruits or vegetables that he/she will eat). you can feed as many greens as you would like, these will not cause the turtle to become overweight, they are more for nutrients. although, you should not feed your turtle the SAME greens everyday, they should have a varied diet for proper growth of their shell and body.

and please, if you did not know any of this, research your pets before you buy them. this way you won't cause harm to your animals!

Okay first off I don't know where your coming from you must NOT have read what I said, what i said was that i DO NOT see him shedding he IS only a year old and he is very healthy I got him as a hatchling ( the size of a quarter) and he has grown to about 2 inches wide and incase you don't know like most animals turtles grow the most in their first year....I DID plenty of research and I HAVE PLENTY of other reptiles I know what i am doing... it was a simple question because i was reading other posts talking about turtles shedding. You can back off and not act like you are the only person that knows what they are doing.

ok.. well FIRST off.. i didnt mean to come off so harshly, but i have seen MANY people come onto this website who have had turtles for MANY years, and were in fact killing them by overfeeding them. so i am very sorry that i 'jumped' to that conclusion. and as far as i have been TOLD (and from my own experience and research) turtles are to ONLY grow an inch per year. and i must have 'mistaken-ly' read your post, i thought you said that you see him shedding often, just not his shell. so im sorry, but i dont believe you have to be so harsh responding back to me! it was an easy mistake to have made. and im not 'all up on your back' like you say... i want to make sure these animals are cared for properly because i have seen MANY and am an owner of one which was abused... and i see that you have PLENTY of other reptiles, but turtles are like no other... as im sure you have experienced... and also, i definitely know and respect that i do not know EVERYTHING there is about turtles, because if i did, i would not belong to this forum to ask questions! so i would appreciate it if you would just cool down and accept this as an apology for coming off so strongly, i didnt mean any harm by it.
