Okay here's a couple questions for "Reptiles" magazine readers.

rujonesin Oct 18, 2004 08:00 PM

I quit reading this magazine a couple years ago. I enjoyed it but my subscription expired and I moved and just never renewed.

Anyway, I was talking to someone at a show this past weekend and he kept talking about a 6 month cycle for rainbows. He said that Reptile magazine had an article written by someone that discussed how to get two litters from your females every year. My questions are this: First, has anyone read this article and do you know what issue it was in? Second, have any of you tried this and what were your results? I would like to read the article and am also curious as to its author.

Jeff, any insight on twice a year breedings? Ever tried it?

Thanks guys!
Mike

Mike,
...I have every issue of Reptiles magazine and I do not remember anything like that. My females are so thin after laying that there is no way I could get them fattened back up to breed more often than once a year. Many of them do not even produce every year.

To be honest with you I wasn't buying into this guy's story too much. He told me he had successfully bred WC adults. He's had them less than a year an my experience has been it takes several years to have success with WC. I have heard of double clutching with egg bearing snakes but considering the amount of time boas carry it didn't seem feasible. Thanks Jeff.

I also have every issue of reptile magazine and I tried to read every article, i have not read anything like that. I really miss Vivarium magazine!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff Clark Oct 19, 2004 01:17 AM

Ricardo,
..."Vivarium" and "Captive Breeding" and "Reptiles and Amphibians" were all great magazines. I believe "Reptiles" bought and shut down each of them. What a way to do business!!! Does anyone know if "Reptilian" and "Reptile Hobbyist" are still published? "Reptilian" was good and "Reptile Hobbyist" prolly should have died without any outside help.

but there is a UK site called www.cviewmedia.com that boasts of a "Reptilian" magazine as one of their publications. Either way, it's a cool site and worth checking out....

There is another European herp mag called Reptilia no N that is excellent. In depth articles and the best photography I just wish it was more about reptiles but even the bug and amphibian articles are interesting. Worth a look, it is bi-monthly and published in Spain and available in English.

Reptiles magazine went downhill starting from the day Russ Case took over as editor. I had been getting Reptiles regularly since 1994, but after a few years with Russ (I think I cancelled in late 2002), I just had to quit. Too many repeat topics on green iguanas, leopard geckoes, bla bla bla. The reader's submissions they chose had dumbed down. Ask the breeder became "ask the breeder for info on breeding corn snakes and leopard geckoes", and the overall appearance just didn't do it for me. The only aspect that stayed consistent was the Vet Q&A with Dr. Mader. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough for me to continue my subscription.

I've got eight years of refernce material in my closet, it's more than enough green iguana info I'll ever need!

Joe,
..I still get Reptiles every month but I do not look forward to it like I used to. There are still a few really good articles in it. It does seem that they made an editorial decision to dumb it down. It is now full of simple articles about the most commonly kept species. It would have been nice if they had left Reptile and Amphibian and Captive Breeding alone to publish something for literate experienced herpers.
