help identifing gecko

MLB2004 Oct 18, 2004 08:02 PM

I live in Florida and around my house i have some very cool looking geckos. They look albino in that they are so white that you can see through them. If you look at them from the side or underneath you can see their organs and stuff. They have large black/brown eyes and some of them will have very light brown stripes on their backs and tails, but for the most part their all really light pink and see through.
The biggest one I've seen was maybe 4 inches long including the tail.
I was wondering if anyone here can indentify what they are and maybe even give me a link to a website that has more information on them.

Thanks!!

It may be a Tropical House Gecko -- Hemidactylus mabouia

Here's a link with some pics. http://www.uga.edu/srelherp/jd/jdweb/Herps/species/Forlizards/Hemmab.htm

I just googled it...so I'm not sure.

Thanks, but no that's not it. These are more rounder in shape, not so pointed heads and have no spots. I'm going to try and take a picture of one of them.

Um... I know the geko you are talking about... i forget the name of it, but it is from africa. The name the last person told you may actually be correct; i didnt look at the picture, but they are an extremely diverse species, with several different "localities" if you will.

alright- scratch what I told you before.

I believe the geko you are looking for is Hemidactylus turcicus- no keep in mind the possible variation of the geckos you know and these.

here is a pic:

in any case, i am certain that they are some type of Hemidactylus

I have those all over my house, too , and have even caught several inside. I've recently began keeping some in my room in a small terrarium. The pic that I_am_nick put up is identical to the ones I've captured and began raising. They are an introduced species originally from Southeast Asia, if I remember correctly. But they have flourished here, and are found in the more humid southern states like Louisiana (me) and Florida. Some people even call them Florida house geckos. I adore them and wish there were more information available on them.

Hello fellow Louisianian:

Hey i find them all over louisiana too!

Put some green anoles in there with them, they make great tank mates, and care is identical for both species.
