My poor Draco

AggieCS_31 Jun 28, 2003 06:53 PM

My hatchling BP was found dead in his cage this morning. He was suffering from internal parasites (flagulated protozoa) and was being treated for that. But i also noticed that his lower third of his body was somewhat unresponsive. He couldnt control his bowels, couldnt hang from his limb, and hardly moved it when he would move. I know its too late for him now, but could anyone help me so i can look into it if it happens again? Thx in advance

When reptiles or amphibians exhibit unusual symptoms, a qualified reptile vet should be consulted as soon as possible. To prevent this type of problem in the future, research the husbandry of the animal first, so that you know what is "normal" & what is not normal for that particular species.

That could be a lot of things, including a few nasty viruses. The only way to know for sure is to have a vet examine the body. Do you have any other snakes?

I did take it to a very reliable vet and had him examined before his death. He said it was only parasites and i was treating him for it for almost 2 weeks. I didnt have the body examined because i couldnt afford it at the time. He didn't show any other real signs of anything other than parasites. He was eating well, very active...It was almost all of a sudden. I considered maybe IBD, but i asked my vet and he said it was only parasites. If it was IBD, how could I clean my cage to where it would kill off everything. Ive already had it bleached for about a week now, and also used wipe out 1 afterwards for a couple days on the cage and furniture. Do you think that would be suitable or should I invest in another tank. I currently have a 55g but i can get a 40g breeder for a very good price around my house. I dont have any other snakes at this time, but i did do a couple rescues for my friend for a couple months (prior to dracos purchase) to give them time to move around and get into their apartment. I disinfected the cages the same way i had mentioned, so i dont think it was anything to do with that. Thanks for your replies.

The vet had no way of knowing for sure if the snake had IBD, but he was probably right if he didn't think he had it.
I think bleaching the cage would be ok, it's what my vet recommended for killing viruses.
