i was jsut at superpetz in altoona PA where i looked into the leo cage just to take peek. there were about 8 of them in a 5 gal tank. and one hide. 4 of the leos lost there tail and where sick and sad looking. i wanted to get one of the sick ones but realy short on funds so i woulda probly done more harm. but the point is these pet stores need to look into the proper care of each reptile they have and give advise based on that and not on how much money they can get. but those leos looked realy un happy and the 4 that droped there tail looked very sickly and need proper care.

Yes but it isnt a chain pets tore and i know the owner personally. Plus my geckos were taken very good care of.

I totally agree. If it's that bad report them to the SPCA, talk to the manager and threaten to report them etc.

He can try but if he doesnt report them they will continue to do it. All the big chain pet stores do. If he jsut threatens they will clean up their stuff for a week then it will go back to the the old way.

I know but atleats it will help for a little while. Gurnham4 on this forum reported them and they took every gecko to the vet. You might have to keep reporting them until they are forced to keep they place nice. We can only hope.

its not jsut the leos that are over crowded but they are the only ones with droped tails and sikly looking. they have some neer like 10 anoles in one 5 gal tank.

LOL i wish the one near me only had 10 anoles per 5 gallons. They have atleast 20 in there. Its pretty sad, but if people keep buying like they do they are just going to keep doing it.

first what is the SPCA so i know what im talking about.
and there is this small ma pa pet store rihgt down the road and he seems to know what hes talkin about and dosent realy keep to meny reptiels there he will order them from his breeder. he dose keep 3 leos and they seem alright. this is the guy im probly ganna bet my AFT from.

the SPCA is an organization that is run by the goverment. Im not positive but i think they can shut down pet stores for cruelity to animals and all that other stuff. Also you go to the SPCA and they usually have dogs and cats(mabye) for cheap that were taken away from people or people gave it to them.

SPCA is the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. If you go and complain to them, make sure you let them know that the leos need more space, they usually deal with dogs and cats. I don't think its run by the government though, I think it is just a nonprofit organization, I could be wrong though.

there is not much we herpers can do to save the lives of all the poor geckos in pet stores. Im content that i take superb care of mine and that they are living healthy happy lives.

Call the police station and ask if they have animal cops. If they do then have them sent over to the superpets and have them put superpets out of business.
If I were a cop now I'd already have shut down Petco, Petsmart, and Superpets. But I have 3 more years of schooling before I am one.
If you don't have animal cops in your town, the best you can do is go to an animal shelter or an animals rights group and say hey, more leo's are gonna die if this place doesn't get shut down.
These places all need people like us who know how to deal with these animals to work there. It's the fact that they don't have experienced workers and they don't wanna spend a lot of money to take care of their animals.

Hey thats a good idea. Or maybe call the local news and have them do a story on how bad the animal's conditions are there. That should get them to clean up or lose a lot of business.

im not trying to put anything outta busniss. sry but that gos against my political belifes. all i wanna do is make it clear too the manager that these thing need proper care. and should hier someone speclied in herps to make sure that they are properly being taken care off. and us as people interested in herps should try to only deal with stores and people who take care of there herps correcly. this is how the free market and capitalizm work. the stores who dont take care of there animals will evently go outta bussnis or stop selling reptiles is no one gos there to buy them.

Not put them out of business, but hit them where it hurts them with their sales. Id just go in and tell them that the animals are being forced to live in substandard conditions and they are suffering from it, and that they should change it. Kindly remind them that animal cruelty laws apply to all animals, not just cats and dogs. If they had 5 sick dogs in a small cage I'd bet they would already have the SPCA over there. Maybe you could help them out, let them know that the animals have certain requirements. It isn't fair to the animals to live like that and maybe the store needs reminded about it. I'd rather have a store shut down this week then go out of business over the next 2 or 3 years because of slowing business. Think how many animals could die in that time there.

I go to pet stores about three times a week. I always notice that the leos either have lost tails, Too many to a tank, Not enough hides or just a dirty tank. Also Im not sure how many people have noticed, but they almost never have humid hides in there. I was at a petco the other day and I was actually a little impressed comparing them to other pet stores. They had a humid hide and only about 5 leos in the tank. They had 3 hides and all of the other manditory stuff. This was the first time I ever saw a pretty sutable cage in a pet store.

that is why we should bring it up to pet stores that they need to be keep like that. most smaller or none big name pet stores do keep there herps better.

I reported my local petsmart to the ASPCA for having really sick leos. A stopped by a few weeks later to find out what happened to the geckos and they were taken to the vet... hopefully they weren't put to sleep but they probably died.
If you're a cop it's hard to just "shut down" a store. You WISH it was that easy. You have to remember all these corprate pet stores have corprate connections, sure you can fine the crap out of them, but it is damn hard to shut those places down. If it could be done, then it would of happened already. If pet stores raised their wages and made people learn about the animals, the critters might actually have a chance, but since they are cheaping out on employee pay ( $6 an hour isn't crap) then why should an employee make the extra stride in learning about the animal. Best thing we can do is boycott and alert unaware pet lovers. If people stop buying their animals then they will either be forced to stop selling that part of their inventory or they will fix how the animals are being kept.

exacly what i said. thats how the free market and capitalism works. buy us not buying a sertian market from them they will be forced to change there way or contiue loseing money. also makeing the companys awar of the problem could help to. if people would stand infront of these stores and hand out crap to the consumers that they are treating lizsrds in humanely and not well educated on them then people may turn elseware for there reptiles. ect...ect
