Am I over feeding?

treet0ph00ligan Oct 18, 2004 09:06 PM

My Veiled Female is about 2 months, 2 inched from nose to butt. I recently read you can over feed them. She is growing very fast, already 3 times bigger then he brothers and sisters who are still where I got her from. I thought she was growing fast because she is in a very large encloser and her siblings are in a tiny one.

anyways, sorry for going on and on... She eats about 15 small/medium gutt loading crickets every other day. She was only on pinheads for about a month or so.

Thanks for any help.

Chameleons tend to stay small for a while then BURST into growth. Chances are yours is developing more quickly than the ones at the place you got it because you are providing better care (food, light, water, etc). This affects a chams growth greatly. You can over feed chams, but it is hard when they are under 6 months. They are growing so fast they will use everything they eat. As long as your cham is getting dusted crix (as you mentioned) and proper uvb so that his/her bones can keep up and develop as well then you are fine. At about 5-6 months of age I would look more closely at the size of your cham and how much you are feeding. When a cham starts to get over weight you can see it in the tail, it will be round in diameter instead of egg shaped.
My cham ate 15-20 crix a feeding when she started growing, it sounds normal to me

Yup, like Lindsay said it is hard to overfeed when they are young but it is a crucial time for good nutrition. Are you dusting with calcium and a vitamin? How often and what are you using? Feed your crix the healthiest variety of food that you can. A good dry gutload as well as fresh fruits and veggies (no spinach, binds calcium). Do you have a UVB light?
