Inbreeding

atl Jun 28, 2003 07:09 PM

I have an inbreeding issue with my Chucks and DI's. My very first group of hatchling DI's are now almost two years old, and despite my efforts to weed out the males, at least one is still present and has likely bred with a female of the same clutch. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is a potential for problems with the offspring. I also have one male Chuck who is approximately the same age and would have the same potential for inbreeding, but not likely until next year.

Thanks,
Aaron

After how many generations is it UNSAFE?

Thanks for the response. Yes the parents were both wild caught here in the Las Vegas area from separate locations; no likelyhood that they were closely related.

it would be a problem. I have been told it all depends on what is handed down to the next generation. With wild caught animals the genetic variability is so broad that it is not a problem. Of course the more generations you breed down to the more you are likely to have a problem. Tom
