Looking for advice on getting a kingsnake

deviledapple Oct 18, 2004 09:53 PM

I'm looking to get a kingsnake in a few months, and was hoping to get some input on what sort i should get. I'm mostly looking for one thats got nice colours, a good size, and not insanely expensive. The pet store near me only has one kind, (grey banded i belive) and i suspect that 125 for it is a bit high. Any input would be appreciated, and even some recommended sites to purchase from would be nice.

to add onto the "if anyone can reccomend sites" anyplace based in or near hte ft myers area would be awesome, since ive never much cared for the idea of just being "mailed" an animal, instead of seeing and then purchasing

I salivate over any snake with red on it. On the other hand I only have a brown and yellow banded California kingsnake with a purple cast to the brown and green eyes. If I could find one cheap I'd get an Apricot Pueblan Kingsnake, Then I could die happy. ;p

And an albino Tangerine Honduran Milksnake is a shocking color.
By the way, there is a nice guy in Ft. Myers who used to sell snakes, I don't know if he still does. First name is Jeremy. I'm sure you could find him if you asked someone there. He owns a skunk too.

Is a reptile show. This would be a good place for you to start. You can see them, talk to the breeders and probably get the best price

$125 is not high for a greyband IF its an adult and even worth more if its a female adult. Babies that are localitys specific usually around $50. I would not get it if it's a baby though. The young neonate greybands are hard to get started feeding. Stay away from neonate greybands for your first snake.

There is a well known breeder in Ft Myers....Gulf Coast Reptiles owned by Sheila and Chris McQuade. Give them a call and I am sure they will hlp you. They have some super nice snakes that would be perfect for you.

Gulf Coast might also be at the show coming up in Ft Myers. Either way give them a call.

My advice: Check for your nearest reptile show. Most anywhere in the country you can find a show near you. They have great selections and great prices!
