Walking the tegu

Rollin Jun 28, 2003 07:18 PM

Recently I have started taking Taz outside for a little stroll around the back yard. I have to say I'm surprised how good it has been going. First thing he does is take in the scenery for a bit then he walks a little and poops. It’s nice not having to clean it up. Then he walks all around and finds places to bask. He just goes more or less where he wants and I follow close behind. He found a little hole when he was walking around; of course he started digging and poking his nose in there. To my surprise a little chipmunk narrowly escaped Taz’s jaws when he fled from the scaled monster prying into his house. Taz followed him into the flowers but he was no where to be found. Also today a mother and 2 of her young kids stopped dead in their tracks when they saw Taz. They started asking questions and of course wanted to pet him. It’s funny how they seem to be blown away by the site of him. I swear they never looked up at me when I was talking to them and they kept saying how cool he was. So far so good I wish winter would never come, I live in Minnesota. Time to move again already?!

Terrific pic! I need to start Rex and Tamika on leashes as well.
They are pretty mellow outside as it is and seem at easy.
I know what you mean about the winters..............I'm in Michigan. LOL Phoenix is a bit skittish outside yet, but is still young. He is a totaly character though! I need to get our 2 red girls outside as well to enjoy the nice wehater we've been having lately.

I als ocan relate to when people see them. We get looks from "oh my God, they creep us out;" to those of total amazement and kids begging their parents for one!"

Take it easy!

I took my girl Jazz out today too. Gawd that was scary I didn't know she was so dangerous. She almost got me a couple times and I was over 5 feet away, she moves fast! We let her sit in the bushes for an hour but she was still not a happy camper. We had to extend the leach and carefully drag her back into our house. She immediately transformed back into the calm tolerant lizard we knew. Phew I'm glad that's over with. It'll be awhile before we bring her back out again. Be careful when you try to take your other ones out and get a long leach!

Taz looks pretty happy out there. Look at that nice, plump belly!

They do attract a lot of attention, don't they? People always want to pet 'em, and usually call 'em iguanas. 'Course, I can't name dog breeds to save my life, so I'm happy to patiently explain tegus to the many non-reptile people we run into.

I hope Jazz eventually enjoys being outdoors more.

LoL yeah I had a guy ask if he was a Gila monster yesterday. He petted him then smelled his hand... then he told me he was surprised he didn't stink...huh? I didn't know what to say. Everyone that I've meet seems to really like him so far. He attracts more attention then my shiny new rare sporty car ever did!

Taz really does enjoy being outside. He certainly gets much more exercise then he ever has before. In fact he can't wait to get out there! Not 10 minutes after he wakes up he starts pawing to get out of his cage, he never used to do that. Which might not be good because I don't want him to rub his nose off when we go on our honey moon vacation : / We're actually considering taking him with us up to the cabin on the lake....
