I know its hard to see. But yes it really is black and light orange striped.

When describing a snake, stripes run lengthwise...the snake in the picture should be referred to as banded or ringed. Just trying to help...if the picture were not attached, the description would lead to utter confusion.
Without knowing where in the world the snake was caught, I would not even hazard a guess as to its identity.

Assuming you caught it in Idaho it's a Western Ground Snake.
The banded phase of the Ground Snake (Sonora semiannulata).
They are variable, some are completely banded, others partially banded, others are striped from head to tail, and still others are solid colored (red or tan) with or without a black cap.
The banded snakes vary from tan with black crossbars to solid orange with black bands.
