Unknown currently. However while a couple good bites have reported, no lethalaties or severe envenomations have been attributed to them.

They are hard to come by since they were listed as appendix II in part of their range (Honduras I think) despite being locally common in other parts. This is not an unusual situation, one country listing an animal that is threatened not from international trade but domestic problems such as habitat destruction. This doesn't address at all the domestic concerns, merely provides additional hassells for animals collected from other countries.

Thank you verry much.

Can you tell me something about their captive behaviour or do you know annyone who can?

I had one (a 2.5' juv), but the bad news is that it came in heavily parisitized and with in a few weeks sucumbed to it's illness. Since it never ate voluntarily I can offer no insight to that. As to personality. It never offered to bite.

I've caught one in Costa RIca and spoke with others who see them there regularly. They are very mellow as adults, and never seem to bite (don't confuse C. clelia wiht the other species..which seems to be nastier).

As BGF said above, they are nearly impossible to obtain(at least from Costa Rica anyway...I've tried to get some for 3 years now)...and the reason being, as Frank said below, is that they never seem to eat voluntarily in captivity. Most, when caught don't eat, so they are turned loose rather quickly.

I wish I had some, so I could feed surplus baby terciopelos to them.

I've heard some people in holland keep 'm and I hope that they may have offspring in the coming years.
Does annyone know what wild cought animals may cost? Pref youngsters?

Matt Harris Oct 21, 2004 06:22 AM

No I don't. Anything that comes out of Costa Rica has to be captive born and its been some time since I've gotten a list from Honduras.

The last one I saw offered for sale was at $175.

That's not to bad

regalringneck Oct 20, 2004 10:10 PM

Well w/ a sample size of 1! I think I can tell you they're venom is far less virulent than regal ringnecks!.... But due to their large head, Im now unwilling to pick mine up @ night when it is far more alert than it is during the day. The few snakes Ive managed to seperate from its grip & have later necropsied indicate complete hemolytic destruction of the lung.
Mine is a voracious feeder, it insisted on snakes & lizards as a juvenile/subadult but now eats mice too.
I 'spect they'd cost you a bundle [ a testicle]... cuz the only lad I know w/ a pair; Doug Taylor is a capitalist that even our draft dodging; boy-shrub" would admire

Some basic info can be had @:
http://members.tripod.com/tonkashouse/id45.htm

Search the old forum archives [Clelia, Mussurana, regalringneck] & you'll get some more info as well as have a better idea how tough its likely going to be for you finding them.
Pity they're so rarely kept because they are as irridecent & beautiful as any snake Ive ever seen.

Saludos, JG
