Help me figure out what killed my snake....

fatbrain676 Oct 19, 2004 02:22 AM

all right, this sucks, my redtail that ive had for about 6 months just died today. she was about a year old. ive never saw any signs of sickness or failing health whatsoever, but when i went to check on her today she was dead. now, theres only a few things that have happened in the last week that i think could have caused this:

1) about a week ago one of my friends was handling her and dropped her... it was a fall of about 4 feet... she seemed to be fine and i did a quick inspection and didnt feel any broken ribs or anything.

2) i had to go out of town for 2 days, and couldnt get my timer to work... thus she was with out heat for about 36 hours.

i inspected the body after death and found what looks like a blackish blue discoloration on her bottow side near her tail. so ive come to the conclusion that either the lack of heat allowed some wierd infection to rapidly take over.. OR the fall ruptured some internal organ and caused brusing/death. either way it sucks, but im going to be rather mad at my friend if it was his fault

so anyway, i just wanted to get some experts opinions on this. thanks.

Had you fed her before the fall or the temp drop? How big was the meal?

it was about 3 days before the fall, so about a week before the time without heat. it was the same size ive been feeding for a few weeks, decent sized fuzzy.

Well "normally" a fall wouldnt cause death under normal circumstances. However it all depends on how she impacted the ground on her fall.If she hit and had a rib puncture her intestines she could have become"septic" i think is the term when the toxins from the stomach/ intestines poison the body. this is a theory of what "could have happened

2) i had to go out of town for 2 days, and couldnt get my timer to work... thus she was with out heat for about 36 hours.

this should not have cause death unless your temps in the house were well below optimal temps( i had lost power while out of town on all my snakes 2 yrs ago in a ice storm temps of 15-19 degrees some got ri but none died during that time) one did pass laterfrom longterm respitory from it

i inspected the body after death and found what looks like a blackish blue discoloration on her bottow side near her tail. this sounds like possibly internal bleeding possibly fro ma fall as with humans internal bleeding can kill and would also cause the blood to setll in the lowest point of the body BUT also as with humans when the heart stops pumping blood also settle to the lowest part of the body so ive come to the conclusion that either the lack of heat allowed some wierd infection to rapidly take over.. OR the fall ruptured some internal organ and caused brusing/death. either way it sucks, but im going to be rather mad at my friend if it was his fault
unless your friend intentionally dropped her while yes you can be upset i wouldnt take it out on them accident happen shoot i have even dropped my own snake from a sudden action they take and not expect it . i would maybe talk to them if you feel this was the cause and explain that maybe the next snake you have if they choose to hold it they do so sitting onthe couch/bed not standing and explain that snakes can move FAST even a boa/python can move when they want to faster then we think

so anyway, i just wanted to get some experts opinions on this. thanks.
