Reptarium for Sav. Monitor?

r3n33 Oct 19, 2004 02:25 PM

Hi,

Has anyone had any luck w/ Reptarium cages for sav monitors? My sav is only about 6 - 8 inches now, but I want to start planning for the future. I've read that some people keep adults in a 260g w/ no problem. Opinions?

if im not mistaken raptariums are soft mesh cages with a zipper opening .. in this case i would not recomend these for a monitor for a few reasons. humidity is not really a problem here but monitors require very high basking spots which are difficult to keep in a cage which does not hold any air at all. The most important thing is that monitors dig and have claws which I could see coming in handy in escaping from a soft mesh cage. I would suggest a large commercial plastic cage or a home made wooden cage, the latter probably cheaper.

I'd have to agree, I have a half grown Sav that can shred metal insect screen. I'd hate to see the nylon screen of a Reptarium when he decides it's time to come out to play. He currently lives in a cage made of PVC tubing frame with green nylon chicken mesh stretched on the sides, plywood floor covered with vinyl floor covering and 1/2" hardware cloth top for CHE's and fluorescents.
Slate under CHE's hold the heat well for basking and radiate a lot of heat, the room itself is kept fairly warm so ambient temps aren't a problem. Lightweight, easy to clean, inexensive to make and very durable.

Hope this helps.
