is it genetic? I have two bloodreds that have a VERY similar head pattern that looks like Van Gogh's Scream painting.

is this head pattern somehow linked to the genes associated with certain genetic lines of bloodred trait?

Carl,

Maybe your snakes came from the same lines as mine. One of the babies had a head that was totally white. It looked sick in my opinion, but was healthy. I think this blood line has on of the cleanest lack of pattern that I have seen, The picture doesn't do it justice, as it accentuates the saddle pattern. I don't see the skull pattern though?

The so-called "skull" head pattern is very common among bloodred hatchlings, and it is a part of the pattern mutation common to all animals that carry the pattern mutation gene, regardless of the coloration involved.

On the best examples, you can look at a picture of the top of a corn hatchling's head, with the nose pointed downward, and the patterning looks very much like a skull looking back at you.

It is one of the tell-tale marks of a bloodred (or related morph), and may even help in determining the quality of a particular specimen for some people.

Hope that helps some...
