Mojave to Mojave

morphkingreptile Oct 19, 2004 07:50 PM

Well Folks this is what we have been waiting for but it looks like chances are slim that we will find out this season what the out come of Mojave x Mojave breeding will be 5 slugs and 2 good eggs ... Next season all our Mojave Females will be bred to White Snakes and Lesser Platinums so someone else will have to prove it out for sure if we miss, and chances look good that we will with only two viable eggs. We believe the Super Mojave is a Leucistic but we will not know for sure until someone does it ....

Good Luck to All!

Please keep us posted. I will be getting my mojave very soon. I feel that the mojave to mojave will produce lucys but I hope they they produce a differnt snake. Good looking female you have there.

I know I'm sometimes considered a pessimist but I really don't think a Super Mojave will be the Leucistic. I think other genes are working here. I think it's entirely possible that the Mojave is het for Leucistic but that the Super may be something else (like a double het). This may not appeal to most but I am actually hoping it's true (the whole double het hypothesis).

With that said, you still have a 25% chance of producing a Super (whatever it turns out to be) and I'm still rooting for you in a big way.

Good Luck!

Actually he has two 25% chances (if both good eggs hatch). It comes out to a 43.75% chance of producing a homozygous Mojave (if the combination isn't lethal).

Thanks Randy. I'm really am not that great with math, I knew the per egg percentages and wasn't sure what to do with the numbers from there.
I actually woke up this morning thinking about this topic (if I can't solve a problem it'll stay with me until I do).

I really want to figure this out but I think I'll need more info first. Has anyone else besides RDR and MKR done any work with the Plattys and Lessers? What about Mojaves? Any info you guys could supply would be great.

I think RDR has sold a few lessers and others have reproduced some but I don't think anyone else has a breeding sized female.

Mojave's appear to be spread around more but I think this is the first clutch from mojave X mojave.

The calculation to figure cumulative odds goes something like this:

For each baby, the chance of NOT being homozygous is 3:4 or 75% or 0.75.

To find the chance of both not being homozygous you just multiply the chance of each together (0.75) * (0.75) or more generically p^n where p is the chance and n is the number of eggs.

However, if you are looking for the odds of getting at least one homozygous it's 100% minus the chance of not getting any homozygous.

1 - p^n

So 1 - 0.75^2 = 0.4375 or 43.75%

It's easier to figure the chance of not getting any and subtracting it from 100% to leave the chance of getting at least one than it is to figure separately the chances of getting 1 or 2 or in the case of even more eggs more possibilities. It also works well in this case as success is measured by getting at least one homozygous and two would just be gravy.

Congrats on the two eggs. It's too bad those other eggs aren't good, but two is better than nothing. I'll be pairing Mojaves together this season so if you don't hatch out a Super or a White Snake from your clutch, maybe I'll be able to do it. I personally wouldn't mind if Mojave x Mojave produces something other than White Snakes. I think it would actually increase the appeal of the Mojave because there would be a greater variety of morphs that it can produce. I think there's still a lot to do with this morph. What happens when you cross it to granite? yellow belly? Lots of other possibilities...

Good luck guys!
