Help ID Turtle (maybe Tortoise)

CWatsonJr Oct 19, 2004 08:25 PM

We are in Ventura County California (SoCal) and it has been rainng for the last couple of days. We think this is a tortoise that had to come out of its burrough because of the water. We have a neighbor down the street that found one just like it but bigger last spring. They tried to take care of it but it died.

We found the turtle in our front garden so we moved it to the back yard so it wouldn't wander into the street.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is a non-native species - a Three-toed box turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis), the commonest box turtle in the pet trade. Since box turtles have a rather limited range, you might check around as to whether a neighbor has lost it. It is native to theh heartland, from Missouri to Texas and often hibernates, so it may or may not eat for you at this time of year.

Thank you very much for this information. I guess I shouldn't worry that it is out in the rain then. It is probably used to the water.
