what are some symptoms of a Respiratory Infection?

tann Oct 19, 2004 08:50 PM

Critter has been sneezing alot lately, has been twisting his head back in forth like he has a lugy stuck in his throat, and has been repeatingly holding his head up in the air and opening/licking his mouth. Also, he makes little "wimper" noises now.

He hasnt been feeding very well either. He will no longer go after a cricket unless it passes right by him and any attempts at rodents are useless, live or dead. He also doesnt move around all that much and when he does, he takes long pauses.

I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow to get it checked out and also for a normal chek up since he hasnt been yet.

Tann, it sounds like a good thing you are going to a vet. Usual symptoms are wheezing, popping, mucus, or bubbling from the nostrils or mouth. Be sure to check your temperatures, and humidity if necessary. BTW what type of monitor? How hot is your hot spot? I would expect your vet will go through that. They will also be able to fix your problem if there is one. Let us know what happens.

Good luck and hope all goes well.

welp, i screwed up while cleaning his cage today and the lid fell off and broke all the lights and fixtures but the CHE.

Soooo......I went and baught 3 more fixtures, another floodlight 90w, and I'm trying a 120w Spotlight out to see how it works for him. I read that you need to raise the temps in the cage while they have a RI. I'm also going to purchase a tempgun from Pro Exotics, but right now I'm using a Digital Thermometer and the basking spot reads around 135-140, ambient 90-95, cool end I have no idea, the thermometer wont go in that far, but I stuck it in as far as I could and it read at 86.

I also took out that old cinder block I was using for his other tank to allow him to be able to spread out evenly on his basking spot.

When I was watching him earlier, I did notice some snot or something come out of the left nostril when he sneezed. I feel so sick to my stomach just knowing he's suffering and it's so hard knowing I cant do anything until tomorrow. He's basically like a child to me.

His substrate is a mixture of dirt, sand, and topsoil. His hide is 4 long, flat cinder blocks stacked on eachother. I cant find a piece of cork bark big enough for him and I'm planning on building him something cause the cinder blocks are to heavy and dangerous to him and the cage.

Tann, the setup sounds good. I usually don't keep Sav's with a hot spot more than 120, but if the cage is large enough he probably has an excellent gradient. I am sure he will go to the temp he prefers. Sounds like he has a respirtory infection. Not to worry. A good vet can treat a savannah with no trouble. After about a week, you probably will not even know he was ever sick. My only other question is; does the humidity dry out by night? If you leave the humidity high all of the time bacteria will grow, and he will get sick again.

Good luck.

Howard.

well, the humidity was around mid 50's to low 60's in his old cage and since then, it's gotten alittle higher in his new one. His new cage is 4x2x3 and he's still only 1 1/2' long. His cage will eventually start to dry out and level off to around the 50-60's like it did with his prevous cage. Theres alot more dirt than his other tank, so it'll take some time, but it gets alittle lower everyday. His water bowl is large enough for him to soak in so thats not a problem and he's currently shedding right now so I know he's growing.

he had Pneumonia and that he is indeed a boy. They gave me some stuff called Claforan that I inject him with every 3 days for a month and told me to keep his temps up and so forth. Cost me $113.75, but he's worth it as long as he gets better.

Sorry to hear your monitor is sick. But on the other hand, he should get better. It is nice to hear you love your monitor so much. Savannah's are often neglected.

Best of luck, and hope he gets better!

i'm not 100% sure, but I think he ate a dead hopper today after he got back. It's not there anymore where it was laying and unless he came back to life, i'm assuming Critter ate it.
