"Sleeping Colors" ??

Vaelus Oct 19, 2004 09:27 PM

Sorry guys, after what happened with my little guy, im getting paranoid about my last kid.

I started to notice a long time ago that when my big guy would go to sleep, he would get *black* spots along the back of his crest...... i thought ok... no big deal....

NOW however, the entire crest edge is black, and he gets big black spots on his sides and such.... only when he sleeps though, thats how i can tell if hes sleeping but I cant find anything on sleeping colors.... he was a baby when I got him, and hes been developing, so I could see if that was normal, but still...

Abate my fears.......

I think it's just heat conservation, check ur night-time temps, depending on the species your talking about it might be getting a little to cool, I doubt it's anything more then that, if u find it's somethingunder 20celcius (dunno farenhiet) then get a nighttime lamp, also can chams see the black (purple) light giving of blakc lights?

Chams tend to be extreemly sensitive to lights, even red or black ones (but not so much as white ones). They are similar to birds, and won't sleep with light on. Before I got a timer I forgot to turn out orions light and she was sleeping with her face shoved into a thick plant. lol. When she woke up she just GLARED at me.... Funny how they can show their feelings.
You don't need to worry about night time temps for a veiled unless it falls below 55*F. 65* - 70* is a good night time temp.
If the spots you are talking about are not there during the day i'm sure you are fine. My female panther turns bright peachy pink at night. Sometimes she gets that colour with mint green bars (it's very pretty). I don't have a veiled, but hopefully knowing that other chams change colour at night will hepl you feel better until some veiled owners can help you out...
I read your earlier post about your little one. i'm very sorry to hear that that happened. I know how hard it is to lose an animal, and their is something about chams that makes us bond to them stronger than you might expect to bond to "just a lizard".

Both of my female veileds turn the brightest of green and the male is a beauty of a peach-brown background with fluorescant yellow stipes and little teal dots at the edes of the stripes. He is only ever these colours when displaying (but when displaying he also has dark spots) and when basking as soon as he wakes up.

My male panther turns completly white when he sleeps. He is only about 5 months old so not showing a ton of color just yet.
