still fighting - what to feed him with the syringe?

loko Oct 20, 2004 07:37 AM

he made it through the night and seems to feel a bit better again.

he rejects all live food i offer him. tried a small cricket and a zophoba worm. he will not keep it in his mouth and force it out with his tongue.

i succeeded in feeding him mashed banana with a syringe. he accepts small amounts in his mouth and gulps it down.

this being his only food since a week i am getting concerned if he gets all he needs. i don't want him to win his fight against the bacteria only to starve to death.

what else could i try? i thought of squished egg white but i am not sure if that does him any good.

i'd be glad for any advice

If you can get to a vet, try getting a liquid diet high in calories that is suitable for small animals. I've also heard that ensure works, but I've never tried that before. You can feed with an oral syringe. Good luck.

try repta-aid. As I recall you are in Germany?? Do you know if you can get it there? It is not a prescription and here in the states most pet stores carry it. It is made by Fluker's. I used it for Luna and she liked tha taste so took it readily. Kim's rescued cham, Zoe, lived on the stuff b/c he could not eat on his own. If you get it, use very hot water to mix it as it can be lumpy. I put some on a flat small plastic spoon and gently touched it to her mouth so she could get a taste, then I slowly fed her with the syringe.

Regardless if what you feed him make sure to do it slowly so he doesn't aspirate. BugJuice is another option. Go here for that www.adcham.com/html/husbandry/bug-juice.html

He seems beter re: the URI? You got him to your regular vet, right? what did he say?? Maybe he has something comparable to repta-aid if you can't find it.

When I had to syringe feed I mixed baby food (I tried a few kinds, mine took to sweet potatoe), some powdered or liquid calcium, and pedialite in a cup, the dropped in some adult crix and bashed them until their guts came out. (I tried the blender ONCE.... never again). Make it so that it is thick enough to stick to his lips, but thin enough to use the syringe. If he doens't take it right away try misting him with hot water from above then wait a few min until he starts to gulp then drop some on his lips.... This is what i did and it worked well. you may have to try a few things until you figure out what's best for him.

If you can get it. But if not I noticed that in the ingredients panel one of the first ingredients is powdered eggs so maybe egg yolk mashed up would not be a bad idea. Just make sure to add enough water to it.
