WC Columbia County, FL Eastern King Male

foxturtle Oct 20, 2004 01:58 PM

Here's one of my favorite snakes at the moment. The picture is actually pretty old, but it's the best one I have. This guy is a psycho when it comes to feeding, as is my female. Hopefully I can breed them this coming spring... Both have red at the base of their white scales, so maybe the babies will come out with a lot of red.

Here is a pic of Zee's female Columbia Co. Eastern. I couldnt imaging how kick a$$ the babies would be from these two.

I've had my eye on Zee's female ever since I saw a picture of her. The collector I bought my pair from will sell me whatever he finds as far as kings go, so I may be able to get a similar female from him pretty soon. I'd really like to concentrate the speckling in those animals.

foxturtle Oct 20, 2004 03:29 PM

I just did a quick measurement with serpwidgets, and he came out to 40". He's been given a maintenence diet since I got him back in April, so he hasn't grown much. I've just started raising my own rodents, so he's going to get all he can eat next year, and hopefully he gets some growth.

Go ahead and use the pic for your site. If you're interested in swapping some babies next year, well, let's just say I think those DC easterns are awesome.

Keith Hillson Oct 20, 2004 04:17 PM

I wont have any DC's for quite awhile as I only have babies. I do want a pair of babies from you next year though and I should have some killer NJ's from 2 different females.

NICE male you got there - REALLY! The speckled female (on that picture) I have is currently 49.5" and eating like a pig! We should swap some of the babies next year. I had three out of eleven babies that hatched just several weeks ago (from that female) with quite a bit of speckling already - the other eight babies had very little speckling or none at all (the father had no speckling on him even though he is from the same county). Kind of funny how the most speckled babies are both females . . .

You know Zee that female you sent me has a little bit of speckling on her. Not as much as the male but its there. I will get pics of it this weekend.

That's good! I havn't really examined all of the babies that close . . .Been very very busy lately & working overtime! So there could be a few things I may have missed. I Do know that you have the baby with the nicest looking bands - she really stood out from the others in my opinion. Of course the speckled ones are turning out real nice too!

Haha... I kinda get the idea that Zee is attached to his female king there. I actually wouldn't mind swapping the females for a single season, but I would want to wait until my pair proves out and breeds at least once.

As far surrendering a pair of hatchlings, Keith, it all really depends on what I hatch out. If I hatch out 12, with a decent sex ratio, I'm sure we'll be able to work out some sort of trade. If I hatch out 4 though, I'll probably want to keep them all back for my own breeding projects.

BlueKing Oct 21, 2004 08:58 PM

of next years' babies. That would mix it up a bit and probably increase variety in pattern/speckling??? I could send you one (or a pair of mine) and you could send me one (or a pair) of yours next summer/fall. . .
Which one of your adults has the most speckling, the male or female?

We should definitely make a trade for a pair of offspring next year. As long as I produce at least 2 males and 2 females I'm up for it.

My male has got a lot of speckling, but the female doesn't have any. My male has an almost-chain pattern to him, as opposed to the more banded pattern of your female or my female. He's black (as opposed to chocolate) and has very white bands, with a little bit of red. The speckling is more yellowish than the banding, which is kinda cool.

foxturtle Oct 21, 2004 05:10 PM

I'll definitely swap a pair of babies next year if all breeding goes as planned. I'm really interested in seeing how many babies come out with a lot of speckling from my pair. If you've seen the female on Keith's site, you can tell she has absolutely no speckling. The male's speckles are actually more yellow than his bands. Is your female like that?

BlueKing Oct 21, 2004 09:22 PM

we will definetely have to do a trade! In my adult pair, it's the male who has no speckling LOL!, (but he has some very clean white bands on an almost black body - not chocolate brown).
For speckling enhancement we might have to see if we can somehow get the two together for a breeding - I could maybe send you my female next spring . . .? ? ? I guess first we'll have to see what the next couple of months' bring. But if not next year, then in 2006 for sure! What do you think?
By the way, what state do you live in? (I'm in NC.)

Zee

She's got a dark chocolate brown color to her, and her bands are a little orangish. No speckling at all! Her bands are nice a wide though, and I still think she's a pretty snake.

She'd be good to breed to your male to get some really nice banded easterns.

I'm all for swapping females for a breeding season! I'd really love to see how the babies from my male bred to your female will come out. If we do, we should probably wait until after both our pairs breed next year, but before they go into brumation. That way we'll have them on the same schedule come spring 2006. My pair hasn't bred yet, and I want to make sure they breed before we do any sort of swapping... otherwise we may end up not producing any babies. Assuming all goes according to plan, we can just split the offspring 50/50... sound cool?

I live in Florida in the Tampa Bay area. I do go up to NC occasionally, and I am planning on going there at least a couple times next year... one of the trips will probably be for the purpose of snake-hunting. Let's just see what happens next year, and we'll figure everything out from there.

BlueKing Oct 22, 2004 03:53 PM

Wow that's a beauty - ! I'll have to post a pic of my male very soon so you can see what he looks like. I'll have to wait a few days until I get another camera. I didn't like the one I had, so I turned it in and got a refund. Hopefully I'll have another one in a few days!

BlueKing Oct 22, 2004 03:59 PM

Forgot to mention, 50/50 sounds fair to me. And swapping the females (in 2006) for a season will definetely broaden our collection with diversity. Something that will only benefit BOTH of us. . . . Hopefully I can come down to Tampa maybe next spring - not sure though, but I'll try! I live right off I-95 here in NC, so I'm easy to get to.
