any box turtle owners in new jersey

dragoncjo Oct 20, 2004 03:19 PM

I was just wondering if anyone in hear from jersey has box turtles. I have mine outside, but am planning on bringing them in soon for the winter. Just wondering if anyone else who brings there boxies in for the winter has done so yet. Just wondering at what temperatures do your boxies starting digging in at. Mine are active during the day if the sun is out, but if it isn't forget about it. Also how cold hardy are wood turtles i have seen wood turtles in the wild when there is still snow on the ground. What type of temps can these guys withstand.

I live in south/central NJ and mine are outside all year. They are still out and about on warm days but out of sight when its cooler. They are usually down for good by the beginning of Nov. although if the weather is warm they still can be active through november. Three years ago I found a male the first week of Dec. out on a road on my way to work! It was a very warm fall that year and all my turtles were late going down.
This year mine are starting to go down now. One large female who is always the last to bury herself is still above ground. I usually have to bury her myself. I will probably do that very soon. If I do it too soon she just keeps coming back up.
I don't know about wood turtles maybe someone else could answer that one.

I'm from Indiana and mine have been in since the temps reached 40 at night. I have never hybernated my turtles and I have one that is 32 years old now. Our temperatures are pretty close I think.

I do bring in my Box Turtles, and Wood Turtle in for the winter. I usually bring them in in October. They usually start hibernating around ??? (I never remember, I just know they always do). My Wood turtle, the first year all she did was sleep in her "water pool" all winter, last year she slept under her "cave". Right now she's alternating water during the day, cave at night. You have a Male Wood or a Female?
