Is it a baby?? Some boas can be pretty snappy but if you keep working with them they can get quite docile, mine is very calm except when it comes to feeding time...maybe your is just hungry??

It may be a simple feeding response, you open the cage and the snake thinks food is coming in. I use a hook to touch the snakes so they know that I am not here to feed them but to work with them in some way.
It also can be that you just have a mean snake. I have some boas that have an attitude while others would not bite even if I bit them first!
If it is a small boa it just may be defensive, if you have feeders in the same room room it may just smell the food, it could be a dozen or more reasons.
Good Luck

This is not a judgment on you, I don't have enough information to begin to criticize you for any reason.
In my experience most (not all) "mean" snakes are aggravated by something husbandry oriented. Heat, humidity, feeding, smells, noises, the paint-color in the room, it can be just about anything. Audit your setup, and try some different configurations. You don't practice the drums in the same room do you? just kidding.
Good luck.
Hoppy's question is very relevant, is it a feeding response? Some snakes are just pigs, and want to eat all the time. I have a yearling(1year 4months) het-albino female who is almost 5 feet long because she is such a ravenous eater, and she is always hungry, I have never fed her as much as she wants to eat, she's a monster! Ewww...snakes are scary!

No one in the world ever gets what they want, and that is beautiful. Everybody dies frustrated and sad, and that is beautiful.

i was recently given a baby boa because it was sooooo mean...it would strike constantly and hiss very loud...
I have had it for about two weeks now and have held it only a few times...what i did do was feed it very well..it was pretty skinny when i got it.
i dont know what you are doing with food but hunger can make snakes mean.....
i have been feeding her about every 3 days to put on weight and she has calmed down alot...she is still a little jumpy but has not hissed or bit since a couple days after i got her
with a little more work she will be very friendly i am sure

good luck
