Tremper Albino V regular albino?

AlteredMind99 Oct 20, 2004 04:09 PM

What is the difference between the Tremper Albino and a regular albino? I was looking at the pic of the new gecko below and it just looked like an albino to me. Then again, leopard geckos arent really my thing so it makes sense for me not to know. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Well most people refer to the Tremper albino as a normal albino because they are the most common.

There are three strains known strains of albinism in leopard geckos, with a fourth one being investigated. The three are Tremper, Rainwater, and Bells. Since Trempers are by far the most common, I guess that would make them the "normal" albinos.

Thank you very much for clearing that up. Now, I have a couple other questions to show my ignorance. What do the rainwater and bells look like? Or rather, how do they look different from the Trempers?

Alright...I will post a picture of both, but my rainwater is also a jungle so she looks alot different from the others. Here's the Bell first.

Trempers have pale pinkish eyes with red veins. Since they've been around the longest, they've been bred to come in all sorts of colors and patterns. Their body color can range from bright yellow & white to deep orange to pink & yellow to brown & lavender. After you get used to seeing them, they're very easy to recognize. Rainwaters and Bells aren't developed to the point where they come in all the different varieties Trempers do.

Rainwaters (aka Las Vegas albinos) have darker eyes that are more grayish. Sometimes their body color will look like Trempers, but Rainwaters tend to get a faded washed out look to their colors as they mature. They've also got more lavender.

Bells have yellowish eyes with distinct red streaks. If you ever get the chance to see them in person, they're very cool. You don't see any other leos with eyes like Bells. They tend to have a sharp contrast to their colors. Sometimes a dark brown Tremper can look like a Bell, but you can still tell them apart either by the eyes or by looking at the tail. Brown Trempers have banded tails whereas Bell tails have a more speckled look to them.
