So...whats it like owning a FWC + questions about collections...

ZPD Oct 20, 2004 04:10 PM

Im interested to hear any comments or observations regarding behavior or husbandry, pros and cons or anythng else. I have gotten to a point where I have more or less lost interest in the morphs and the idea of me becoming a "breeder" except for my pair of Indigos (fingers crossed). I used to rationalize buying snakes by saying I'll buy a pair and breed them". Well now im open to the idea of just buying what i find interesting, even a single animal, just as a pet, not money making. I specificaly enjoy large colubrids with interesting behaviors or markings. I love pituophis and beauty snakes alot as well. So you can see how I have arrived at FWCs. I am also curious about these "ptyas" as well, although i doubt i will be able to track one down. So anyhow, enough about me. Lets hear from the FWC keepers! Also if you would like to share anything about your own interests or how they have changed or your herp hobby in general i would be very interested.... Thanks for reading all this..... I have always found it interesting to see what combinations of snakes people choose to collect or keep. A little more, i always find it intresting to see a herper that has chosen to keep just one species and all the subspecies, know what i mean? Ok now im really gonna put a cork in it!

Owning any larger snake has it's challenges and pleasures. My FWC (a male that has just passed 5') is a combination of the dramatic-when he hoods and displays-and the beautiful. Aside from the one time he nipped and envenomated me he has been personable when handled. I do have to use a stick though to initially hook him out of the cage because he displays a certain territoriality.

I also have a Ptyas and my collection is really a hodge poge of unusual species or what ever catches my interest. I have 14 pairs (with breeding in mind).

The collection includes Boids, Ratsnakes and Racers (American and otherwise), Rare Kings, milks, some rearfanged species and vipers and one (blind) Shield Nose Cobra. About sixty snakes (not counting eggs).
