Family hates snakes

trpnbils Oct 20, 2004 04:46 PM

Here's a question... my whole family is afraid of snakes. I used to be until I started working with them (wildlife rehab - it's a good way to get over stuff like that!), and I'm getting a snake next semester. I'll only be at home this summer, so that's all they'll have to put up with one in the house, but it would be a lot easier if they understood snakes better. What's a good way to ease people into getting over irrational fears about stuff like this?

Hate to say it,but it'd be best if you waited 'til you were out on your own to expose your family to such "nasty, horrible creatures"It has taken nearly 20 years ,but at least Mom and Dad will enter my house now.
Educating the public is a matter of talking and maybe demonstrating the good that these wonderful creatures can do.Unfortunately, people with a deep seated often irrational fear or hatred, are much more difficult to educate.
Good luck, but don't expect instant welcome..

I know the feeling. It took me 17 years to convince my mom a garter snake is not Satan that kills newborns and feasts on there blood. My Dad was cool and at a bad financial time for me,I was 23, let me move back in with 14 foot burmese a pair of violent retics and an 7 foot anaconda that could draw a pint of blood from me just by looking at it.If I were you i would wait till I moved out to purchase a snake. And dont get crazy(addicted)when you move out.Your parents might let you back in with one or two but 20 will be out of the question. And make sure to prepare them by sending pics home with you holding and showing how much you love them. And whatever you do make dang sure you dont let one escape. You dont want written out of the will do you?It will just take time and lots of patience.Sometimes the best you can get is that they tolerate them because they love you.Good luck..Paul.
