Shinisaurus Birthing Pic

thmpr134 Oct 20, 2004 05:10 PM

I finally caught a pic of a female Shinisaurus birthing. This is the second year in a row for this female and she is doing awesome. The babies are eating and thriving. Enjoy!

My all time favorite lizard (kept one back in the late 80's-early 90's). Looks like you're having a lot of success with them. I can't believe you actually got a birthing pic. One day I'll have them again, when I don't have to travel so much for work...
Good luck with the little ones!

I'm also expecting two of my females to give birth any time now. BTW, what do you feed to the babies?

Great pic.

Good luck on the births. I feed the babies mostly crickets. They'll also take red wiggler earthworms, mealworms, and waxworms. I've been using Sandfire Bearded Dragon Dust on every feeding and am having incredible results. I like it better than just a calcim supplement due to the fact that you can use it every feeding without worrying about overdoing phosphorus or excess D3. Also it is a great vitamin supplement.
Let me know how the birth goes and if you have any more questions. I'm happy to hear that someone else is having success privately. These lizards are too cool not to be more recognized it the herp world and the pet trade. E-mail or call me if you ever want to compare notes or ideas. Thanks.

Yeah, I'll post when the babies are out.

BTW, what temperature(s) do you keep the females in the holding tank waiting for the births. I'm right now still keeping them outside and the temperatures are between 21Celsius(night) and 27(day). I've noticed the females below 25C tend to lose the appetite and this kind of worries me. They've not been feeding well voluntarily for the past couple of months. Other than that they're find.

Cheers

All of mine are housed in my Asian room. The ambient temp is between 21 and 26C. They all have basking areas of about 28C. I wouldn't worry about them not eating well right now. Mine typically go off of food for at least two months prior to birth. They also may not eat until after brumation voluntarily. But when they wake up, watch your fingers! Good luck.

Great picture! I just received a 1.2 trio of Shinisaurus earlier this week. The large female is obviously gravid. I'm thinking of setting her up by herself in a cage with lots of water plants and keeping her somewhat warmer until she gives birth. She seems to bask constantly and isn't at all interested in feeding. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry so long in responding, computer problems suck! Don't worry about her not eating. Mine usually don't eat for a couple of weeks at least after moving locations. Let her bask and keep the stress level low for a while and she should come around. Keep me posted!
