Help me with sex

zrho Oct 20, 2004 05:26 PM

Figured that title would at least get some attention.

Could someone be kind enough to post a picture of their 3 to 4 year-old female iguanas femoral pores? For that matter, pics of a male would be helpful as well. I recently adopted an approximately 3 1/2 year-old ig. Previous owner believed the animal to be male; morphologically, I would have bet my eye-teeth that it was a female. However, under the hood raises some questions. My vet and I both let out a befuddled "Ooohhh ...?" when we flipped the animal to have a look.
Be curious to see if someone can help me decide if I have a 'Sidney', or a 'Sydney'.

there are a few ways to tell if you have a male..

1) if you look on teh inside of teh legs you will see pores and if its a male they will be filled with what will look like a wax plug..
here is a quick shot.. sorry for quality but he was ripping my arms apart and its the best i could get

2) males have a much more pronounce crest

3) males have "Brain Bumps" twords the back of there head...

as shown twords the back

also males get pretty pissing around this time of year and will head bob alot.. mine tries to attack me when i walk into my room now... fun fun fun

I appreciate the responses, and thanks for sacrificing your arm Mike D, to help me out.

I believe my original thought is correct - my new adoptee is a female. She has very pronounce pores. The first four distinctly have large plug secretions. However, her coloration and head shape certainly appear female (to me at least).

I'm also basing my belief on the direct comparison of my second adoption - a 2 and half-year-old male that I obtained last night, brain-bumps and all.

Following Mike's example, here is a picture of Syd's femoral pores.

Anyone disagree that the animal appears to be female?

Here is a dorsal headshot as well:

There are the remnants of an old thermal burn visible on the animal's right shoulder.

Attended the All New England Reptile Expo in Manchester NH this past Sunday and spoke with some great folks from the Green Iguana Society. They had a wonderful 13 year old female on display. Based upon my observation of this very large female - and the size of her femoral pores, it indeed appears that Sid is a male after all.

I do find it interesting how morphologically different some iguanas can appear. I am aware that there can be distinct regional differences in coloration or appearance. My two adoptees are good examples of those contrasts.
