Pros and Cons of owning a hognose

charky2002 Oct 20, 2004 07:08 PM

I'm thinking about getting a hognose for my next snake and I was just wondering the best place to start western or eastern also some of the pro's and con's of ownership. I have already done lots of research on there husbandry but any info that i'm not likely to find on the net would be greatly appreciated.

I have only Western Hognose so I may be biased but I've been told that they are much easier to maintain in captivity than the Easterns. Of course one of the problems that may arise are the feeding behavior, or lack thereof. It gets frustrating at times.

Yea i have been seeing a lot of "my snake won't eat" posts, right now I am deciding between a jungle carpet python and a hognose...I have wanted a hog for ages but I probably wouldn't be able to get any frogs, toads, ect to scent the pinkies in the case of a picky so I will probably wait till next spring when I know I can get some amphibians. But any other info from any one would still help a lot.

I have a ltc eastern hog that's a picky eater. Haven't gotten him to take pinkies yet, but have had luck feeding him pieces of "frog legs" of appropriate size. Shipped frozen, and if he decides he is tired of them I could always fry them up. Yum!!
