Mud snake

caecilianman02 Oct 20, 2004 07:13 PM

Hi there:

I recently saw an ad for some baby mud snakes, complete with a picture. They looked EXTREMELY healthy. The ad stated that they were feeding readily on minnows. They cost only $10 dollars each. Well, I have an interest in little-studied mysterious snakes, so why not?
I have not yet ordered one, but plan to. I have a setup ready and was wondering what you thought of this:

It is a good sized nickel-plated aquarium with a slate bottom. On the bottom is a layer of pea gravel, saturated with spring water. On top of this is a layer of washed "play sand" saturated with spring water. On top of this is a layer of "Reptile Jungle Mix", also saturated with spring water. Next, there is a huge layer of sphagnum moss that is kept very moist. Finally a tight fitting lid.

Any other suggestions?

Sounds too wet. And I would want pics to prove they are feeding before buying.

Hi there:

I am planning to experiment a lot with feeding. Judging from the pictures, these guys are doing pretty well.
I also had concerns about the moisture at first, but several care sheets suggested raising these snakes in aquariums like tentacled snakes. I just came home with some stuff from my local exotic pet store. I plan to create several more layers, with a moisture gradient. That way the snake can slither up and down throughout the substrate to find a place it likes best. Any other suggestions?

Trying not to let the bite slow me down too much. It hurts like none other though and is still extremely swollen. I really appreciate your concern, as well as everyone else's ( with maybe one exception LOL). I will keep everone updated. Take it easy, bro.
