dumblond81 Oct 20, 2004 08:03 PM

My neighbor is into all this organic herbs and stuff. She said she had turtles growing up and that i should be giving mine cod liver oil everyday. I never head of doing this, and i dont want to to if it will cause damage to my turtles. i have one river cooter(2 in), one res(3.5 in), and one painted(2 in). Please let me know if anyone has ever heard of doing this.

Thanks

Actually, codliver oil is given to turtles. Mostly when they are suffering from vitamin A defeciency. Not necessary to add it as a supplement to their diet though. (smelly and it will mess up your water quality) Just offer a good varied diet and you will not have to bother with using codliver oil.

I was thinking it was silly at first too. I dont think it would dirty my water b/c she said to give them each 2 drops in their mouths a day.

My turtles are all in good health, except the res who is getting over an ear abcess. Which was removed about 2 months ago.

So i shouldn't give it to them?

Also, my turtles refuse to eat anything but REPTOMIN FLOATING FOOD STICKS. i've tried giving them crill, different brands of food, reptomin treats, even greens. They wount eat it.

Have you tried live fish ? My turtle at first didn't know how to catch them, but he soon caught on. Offer greens everyday, they will soon eat some eventually. Even try skipping the pellets for a couple days and just give them greens. I had to do that to get my guy to eat them, now almost 2 years later he loves greens as much as anything else.

I tried guppies, but they swam away from them and refused to go near them. I've been trying to give them romane lettuce, it dosent work, what other greens can i try?

I use dandilion leaves in the summer, from places I know for sure have not been sprayed. Try carrots that have been cooked. I sometimes just give my guy some left over veggies from whatever I had for supper, without anything on them like butter. The first week my turtle wouldnt eat so I bought guppies. 2 disappeared after a couple days, but he never touched the other one. It stayed with him for about a year until one day he ate it. Just keep trying and eventually he'll clue in. The young turtles usually prefere meat over veggies, so just keep offering and one day he'll surprise you.

Oh and I find when your turtle is big enough, they really like chasing orange feeder gold fish. But you cant give those too often.
