sulcata questions... please... need advice

smith710 Oct 20, 2004 08:57 PM

Ok I have a Sulcata tortoise and I just have a couple of questions about foor and lighting. I was looking on lllreptile for uvb lights and I found a few and I was just wondering whatyou think I should get for it. There is a zoo med 5.0 uvb strip bulb, exo terra 5.0 ubv strip bulb, exo terra 8.0 uvb strip bulb, then there are a 5.0 and 10.0 compact flourescent uvb bulb.. but those are like twice as much as the strip bulbs. I figured I should get the 8.0 but I wasnt sure if that would be too much. Ok and the question about foor. A friend of mine has a prickly pear cactus and he has had it for years. He never used any pesticides or herbicides or anything like that for it. I was wondering if it would be ok to feed to my tortoise as a treat.
Thanks

I can't advise on the bulbs you listed. I use a Powersun spotlight because I only want to plug in one lamp per enclosure. Cactus berries are fine, just don't overdo. They're quite messy and the torts love them. They can also be froze, but are mushy when thawed. The torts don't care. Cactus pads are excellent if you can grab a few of those. I remove the thorns. You can pinch them off with one of those strawberry huller things (like a short fat pair of tweezers to take the green top off the strawberry). Hope that helps. Here's Virgie...

I clearly meant to type 'frozen' instead of 'froze'. I am appalled at my typo indicating poor grammar skills. Here's another cute photo of Virgie to make up for it.
