Is CareFresh or Kaytee's response to carefresh good as bedding for my breeder rats?

I don't know about this stuff but I use ALFALFA (or commonly known as Hay) and it works very well to help control the smell. Rats don't smell as much as mice do but it does help. It is also very cost effective. You can buy it at your local feed store. I buy mine for about $7.00 per bale (and it weighs better than 50 lbs.) which lasts a long time depending on how ofter you clean and how many "tubs" to clean.

carefresh and similar products are very good, also very expensive.i would be reculant to use baled hay or straw because the little critters that live in the bales might over populate once moved indoors.i buy 5 cubic feet of pine bedding at wal mart for $5.00 and it works well.have fun!

I used Aspen bedding for my rats. Bedding like pine and other woods give off strong fumes that I think can bother the rats. I used hay once and it did have a bunch of little bugs living in it. So Aspen has worked great for me and I breed plenty of rats.

only problem with hay, alfalfa or timothy hay, you wind up having little brown/grey moths flying all over the house. I had this problem with packaged timothy hay I bought to feed my guinea pigs. The moths didn't seem to bother anything else in the house, just annoying having them fly into my monitor screen or TV when I was trying to watch something.

I personally find them both too pricey and dusty for practical use. I use either Cellsorb Plus/ Rabbit Pellets/ Yesterday's News (pelleted cat litter) Heavier but work better.

the best thing i have ever used is aspen pellets, they last for weeks does not require a large amount, just cover bottom of tray or cage, with single layer and it can last up to 3 weeks . it has for me . i put a page from telephone book for nesting because the pellets absorb moisture and expand as it works w/o newspaper or some form of nesting material it will dry out and kill pinkies or rat pups , what ever you are rasing!
