Building new cages

erikj Jun 28, 2003 10:28 PM

Hi all,
I was thinking of building a cage that is 4' long X 2' deep X 2' high. My only concern is, how do I heat it? If I use plywood or melamine for the bottom, what can I do to heat the cage? I was thinking of a t-rex heat pad placed underneat the wood. If I use a melamine bottom (1/2"-1/4" how much heat will actually get through? I was thinking of doing that, and adding a heat lamp with a 50 watt bulb or so. Does that sound good? How do people here heat their homebuilt cages.

We built a cage of similar proportions to what you describe using melamine (yes its one heavy cage). Ours is about 4x2x2 and has a 1' shelf set about half way up running the length of the cage.

For heating, the only thing we use is a 1' x 2' radiant heat panel attached to the top on one side. It gives a perfect heat gradient from about 79* in one bottom corner to a basking spot of about 88-90* on one side of the shelf.

Here are a few pics:

This ones a little fuzzy, but gives you an idea of the layout. the heat panel is attached to the top left.

Ayasha has really seemed to to enjoy this cage and makes plenty of use of all areas of the cage.
