trouble keeping the humidity up

amysguy Oct 21, 2004 07:45 AM

I have a 33 gallon tank and it seems like no matter how much i spray the tank the humidity will not go past 50% and i need to have it 60-70% i've also put a large bowl of water under my light to see if that would work and it didn't so i'm beginning to run out of ideas of ways to get the humidity up. My last resort may be trying a fogger and seeing if this will work. any tip would be great!

Plants are an easy way to keep the humidity up. Not just potted plants, but also small bromelaids that you can just glue or wedge in corners and all over they cage. A moisture retaining layer of bark mulch, wood chips, etc on the bottom of the cage should help keep the humidity up. A fogger or a mister would be a kind of a last resort, but they are great. Josh

Try upside down cat litter pan. Cut entrance hole in one side, tin or sheet metal shears make this easy, then place Sphagnum Moss underneath kitty litter pan. Mist lightly every other day. This has worked for me since the 1980s'.
Since I use large shred Aspen as a substrate in the cage this unpside down kitty litter pan with Sphagnum Moss allows for a controlled area of humidity. Pans are sold at Walmart for around $4 to $6 and available in various sizes. Sphagnum Moss is sold at Home Depot, Menards, and Franks Nursery in compressed blocks for around $5.oo each. Let me know how it works for you.
