blood, red or borneo? crossing with balls?

neilgolli Oct 21, 2004 08:04 AM

I've always loved heavy body bloods, but never had one, I currently have 21 balls and two large common boa's. I've just read that it's possible to cross bloods with balls and thats enough for me to finally say the hell with it, I'm getting myself a female blood.

A few quick questions for you guys,

1. Borneo or Red any insight from keepers of each on general personality and level of difficulty breeding?

2. If I was able to cross breed a blood and a ball, are the offspring steril?

3. Anyone here ever cross breed these guys and have any insight to share?

Thanks guys

The crosses really aren't that nice looking IMO. How would you raise the offspring? High humidity or low humidity?

Why hybridize when you should challenge yourself by breeding the same species? Bloods are tricky and there is more demand for them than the hybrids.

I have seen pictures of them, and to be honest with you, they really are ugly. Stay cool, and don't make freaks on purpose, that would be a shame... j

I really like what I've seen as far as pictures, I've never seen one in person. I'm looking for a fun and different project. I've got some albino balls going now and a pair of adopted common boa's more than ready for this year. I'm crazing some jazz...

Steve Roussis, of Roussis Reptiles in NY had some Marble Blood x Ball hybrids. On screen they do look kinda ugly, but I was lucky enough to see these guys in person and I have to admit I was really impressed. In person, they look like a whole new species of python; heavy-bodied but not as thick as bloods, with a really neat, dark coloration.

I think that Steve Roussis has some info on them on his website. A lot of people are really against hybrids, but if they're something you're into, that would probably be a good place to look.

Good luck; I hear that hybridizing is one of the most challanging things in herpetoculture.

This is true, ugly is in the eye of the beholder. You really didn't ask how anyone felt about the crosses, and I guess I should have just left it alone. Sorry about that, and best of luck with getting your jazz worked out........ peace out j

Hey,
My point on this subject is, why ruin a good thing. If you've never kept a blood, like Rich said, why not challenge your self with keeping a blood, and propagatinig some pure unadulterated bloods and short-tails. Why create Frankensteins, that have no place in herpetoculture IMO.

One show I saw a very young one, and then at Tinley park I was able to see an older one. A year or two old I'm guessing?

I think they're some of the ugliest crosses I've seen. IMO, they don't enhance anything about either one of the snakes. Takes away the beautiful coloring of the bloods, and takes away the 'cute' from the balls. I don't really have a firm stance for/against hybrids...i just don't think this cross does good for either snake. Just my .02.

I don't think they've been around long enough for anyone to know about the fertility of the offspring..but i could definetly be wrong on that. I think they're called 'Super Balls'....what a joke..

The beauty of a ball or a blood alone should be enough, but crossing the two, just plain weird looking. Please don't.I'm curiouse how this question fares in the ball forum?

I had checked out the Roussis Reptile site awhile ago, and I remember all the crosses and stuff. Not a big fan of them but.. the "super balls" look better than regular balls... just not better than Borneos

But does anyone know anything about the Lecoustic project they have? Theres just like one bad picture of the snake and not really any info. Looks to be an amazing animal tho.
