Feeding questions

AlteredMind99 Oct 21, 2004 11:19 AM

I have a few questions about my juvenille red tegus diet. the only thing he seems to like with great consistancy is thawed pinky mice, but i am trying to keep his diet as varied as possible. He does not seem to like crickets at all. And he wont touch any of the fruit i put on his dish for him. Does any one have any suggestions? What sorts of fruit do they tend to enjoy more, I have tried Kiwi, Papaya, Grapes and a couple other things. Is it normal for a juv to not want to eat fruit? I know they need the vitimin C to shed properly and i am worried that he might not be getting enough. Any suggestions?

Thanks very much

I lucked out and my red loves Grapes, but so far won't eat peaches or banana. And like yours, mine loves rodents but won't touch insects. I did have a little luck w/ superworms scented with chicken broth. I noticed how the tegu got very active when he smelled the chicken noodle soup I was eating, so I tried it. I think the tegus are very scent oriented feeders, so I would suggest "tricking" your tegu by scenting what you want him to eat (for his own good) with someting he does eat. Egg is a good thing to use. Eventually it should start taking the items unscented.
