What is the minimum weight to breed a female

billcherep Oct 21, 2004 11:45 AM

I know I have seen these post but never a definative answer. I have never breed BP and am so anxious to do it I am about to explode. I purchased a couple of Subadults about 7 months ago and they are just slow growers. Long story short. I can get one of my Females up to 1000g in the next month. Can I breed her or not? What would happen if I do. She is a late 2002. Thanks.

Do some reading and look into Dr Sewards video on Breeding Bp's and the Barkers video as well. I am myself soon. Research is critical.

But from what I understand the female should be 2 yrs of age and at LEAST 1200 grams before breeding is EVEN attempted or she may bet eggbound. Breedin is very taxing on the females so overall the heavier the girls are the better the odds are I hear that she can deposite her eggs. Males I think can breed at 900 grams but I've read 1000g or more produces more viable sperm.

So to make a long issue short, if you have juvis no, I wouldnt attempt to start cooling them.

Anyone who has more experience in breeding, feel free to add or correct me in any mistakes I might have made. I'm new at it myself.

Males tend to produce sperm plugs and become viable between 600-800g from my experience.

I had a male breed last year at 400 grams...

What is the suggested minimum AGE for male bps? Or is that a factor? My pastels (from OzzyBoids) will not be a year until next July and are at 400 grams now. If they might be ready next year, I will start a hunt for more adult females. Only have 1 now.

It is not worth risking it at that weight Bill. In the unlikely event that they bred, it could set your female back a year or so or cause her to become eggbound. Better to wait another year and get her up to 1500 grammes ( the minimum recommended weight) before you breed her. Eric

I figured all of this but I was hoping it wouldn't hurt the females to do it. Oh well. Wait until next year I hope. I purchased these two girls about 3 months ago and have probably only eat 5 times each. We'll see. I know 02 at 900g should have been my first sign. He just said he had not power fed her. Thanks guys and gals.

.......even if it won't hurt female..the eggs are small and you get little babies...
