Need HELP! Have babies, but no cash for crickets!

LuvADragonLuvu2 Oct 21, 2004 11:48 AM

I know i'll get an earfull for being in the situation i'm in, but it was simply bad planning. The eggs weren't expected for another 2 weeks.

Either way, I could really use some help on this from experienced Beardie breeders.

Their two days old and they've had crix for two days so far, but only 60 each day, split between all 20 babies (dusted, for sure). I've been taking my adult beardie pellets and after their moist breaking them up really well, dusting them and putting it in their enclosure. Although I dont believe their eating it. I've also bought that Can'O'Crickets stuff (the tiny ones) and they wont eat those either.

I need help FAST. I can afford to get maybe another 200 crix but thats it. Is there anyway to get them eating the pellets and the can'ocrix?

Also, should I be soaking the little guys everyday in the sink? I have been, but I dont want them to get too stressed out.

I REALLY need help! Any rearing tips/techniques I am in DESPERATE need of.

Thank you SOOO much.

Walter

Dont forget your veggies too. When my beardies were born they started eating small amounts of veggies right away. Of course their diet was mainly small crickets, but they definately mowed those greens too.

As for the pellets i have not got much experience with those, even my adults will only eat them as a last option.

how soon can you get money by? Even if you get the babies eating greens and the occasional pellet at that age they are really going to need much more animal protien than that. I would suggest trying to borrow some money and looking around online for a decent price on crickets.

I misted my hatchlings daily and they always drank heavily from the glass, branches and even the cage floor. i sprayed the water in their dish and they soon became acustomed to drinking from a still bowl.

again, all of these are only my own personal experience and what worked for me may not work for you.

Plain and simple, you need to get some cash to buy crickets. There is no tip or trick to use, just cash and crix.

Wow, talk about bad planning. If there is no other option on getting crix try this. Make their salad (finely chopped greens) mix in soaked pellets (I either soak them in pedialite or water) add some veal babyfood for some extra protein and don't forget the dusts. Crix would be better but this will keep them alive.

What about mail order crickets? I get 1000 for $15 and that is Shipped.

LuvADragonLuvu2 Oct 21, 2004 12:24 PM

would any other baby food work better, or as well as Veal?

heartmountain Oct 21, 2004 12:40 PM

Chicken works alright also but they seem to like the flavor of veal. It's basically the same recipe I use when I've got to hand feed rescues except then I send the whole thing through a blender and make a soup that I can feed with a syringe.

If you are selling the babies maybe you can have someone prepay for one or two, pay for it before its ready to go. That should cover some crickets, especially if they are those really pretty red or yellow babies.
There is that one place that sells crickets, if I rememebr right they are like $12 or $13 to FL GA and SC if you are there, I see there ad every so often on the screen.

I am to lazy to read the rest of the post to see if anyone else thought of this but here is an Idea. You have a local petstore around you? Not a petco or anything like that but a nice family owned petstore? What you could do is tell them your problem and see if they are willing to trade you a large amount of crickets for a couple dragons. That way its a win win situation. they get a couple dragons and you get enough crickets so your dragons wont die on you. better to spare a couple dragons to the petstore and be able to feed the rest then lose them all to starvation.

Borrow $20-$30 bucks off a friend, relative, co-worker whoever, and order some crickets online. Pay the extra bit for over night shipping. Or, just buy what you can get locally till you have more cash.

You expected the eggs to hatch 2 weeks from now, did you have arrangements/cash ready to be on hand to buy the food you needed then? I am assuming you did, just borrow money and pay them back in two weeks. Other than crickets, the only other thing you can offer is other insects, and typically these will cost more. Sure you can offer chicken or veal baby food but this isn't anywhere near as good as insects for your dragon.

Mail orders may accept credit cards, see if you can get somebody with a card to pay for the crickets for you (ie like a friend who also likes reptiles, maybe give him/her first pick of the babies in lue of you paying them back, do whatever it takes to get the money you need to feed these babies properly).

Maybe if we had a general Idea where you are located
someone may be able to help you out.

PS. This is a good learning thread for anyone thinking of
hatchlings in the future. The time involved and feed that is
going to be needed for babies.
