Whats defined as "problem shed"?

Johelian Oct 21, 2004 12:30 PM

I saw tc5000s post on shedding and humidity and I was just wondering what is considered "problem shed". I had a small section of shed remain on my tegus tail recently, and I eventually had to rub it off - it was dry and fell off relatively easy. He also had a little stuck to his toes but again rubbing got it off. Is this problem shed? How biga problem does it present? Does anyone have any pictures of it or anything? I just want to know everything really...

I have not had any ill effects I am just trying to stay on top of things to avoid any issues. You may be able to see what I am talking in the picture below starting at the second solid white ring on his tail. I know stuck sheds can cause reduced circulation and toenails, toes and tails can drop off in extreme situations. My situation is he shed 3 weeks ago and the last half of his tail shed has not come off. I had to remove the top half of tail and the second half is still stuck and is not easily removed. He is now starting a new shed around his head and I expect his body to fully shed the next 2-3 days, which always comes off easily in large sheets. I have used the typical aids; soaking, olive oil and I have even tried shed aid (I think it is called) that may have helped the most. I have a couple more ideas that I know one way or another will work. I just want to prevent this in the future. When I kept him in an enclosure there was never a problem. I have a much larger enclosure for him but he seems to prefer sleeping under the furniture instead of the $500 home I made for him.

Oh no, I wasnt suggesting that anything bad was happening - just it really came to my attention in your other post and I realised I wasnt that sure about when/if I should be worried. I have heard about the toes being constricted and so forth, so I kept my tegu cage more humid while he was shedding to be on the safe side, and as I said there was a bit left on his tail which I had to manually remove. It seems to be something that a lot of people worry about on the forums I flit through, which is why i thought Id better ask

I didn’t think you suggested anything bad had happened. I was only trying to explain what was going on with my guy so others might learn. Most of the shed comcerns revolve around Red Tegu and the need for fruit in their diet. Most B&W and Blues aren’t suseptable unless really neglected.

Oh cool - mines shed was really bitty at first but then he shed his whole body almost in one attached sheaf, so that reassured me Im really paranoid about his toes and things...but hes eating fruit and I bump up the humidity when hes shedding, so I guess that should be ok to go on... If not, advise me further! (please)

If you have a blue or b&w you shouldn't have much trouble. I lost a toenail on a hatchling dumeril monitor I have. It' especially tough when they are small and dark skinned. He came to me with the issue and I caught it but still lost the toenail. I have correct all problems with diet. Just watch their tail if you end up letting them roam free.
